It seems obvious to me that this is a trap set for Obama by the Republicans. It reminds me of the scribes and the Pharisees trying to create a catch 22 for Jesus where no matter how he answered he would offend some structure of authority, whether it be the religious or political authority.
“15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.
22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.” Matt. 2
I want to be clear, I am not comparing Obama to Jesus, I am comparing the Republicans to the Pharisees. They are saying that he could have prevented the shutdown, and he probably could have, but then they would have said that he wasn’t respecting the legislature and he was a tyrant and we have a tradition in the west for dealing with tyrants.
“Et tu brute?”
On another note…
one of my favorite quotes about fascism is this:
“Fascism is when the businesses own the government, communism is when the government owns the businesses.”
and I can’t for the life of me remember who said it. While you might not consider it relevant I have this concept of hidden tautologies which are patterns that are essentially equivalent.

Creeping normality refers to the way a major change can be accepted as the normal situation if it happens slowly, in unnoticed increments, when it would be regarded as objectionable if it took place in a single step or short period. Examples would be a change in job responsibilities or a change in a medical condition.
But that is not the only problem:
Federal employees earn higher average salaries than private-sector workers in more than eight out of 10 occupations, a USA TODAY analysis of federal data finds.
Accountants, nurses, chemists, surveyors, cooks, clerks and janitors are among the wide range of jobs that get paid more on average in the federal government than in the private sector.http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-03-04-federal-pay_N.htm
The reason that this is a problem is that our government currently is based on capitalism. When you have government employees making more money than people in the private sector in equivalent positions what you have is an over class, that is being propped up by the underclass. It is unsustainable and it is wrong. It means that the people are working to pay for people in the same profession as themselves to make more money than themselves. This is a perversion, a corruption. It is unsustainable. It means that the average American is now a second class citizen. We are working for the government instead of the government working for us.
